Meet Tuscany like you’ve never tasted it before. The 2018 Duemani “Suisassi” is not for the faint of heart — or the impatient. This is biodynamic Syrah from high up in the hills of Riparbella, just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean. Forget what you know about Tuscan wine: “Suisassi” is feral yet refined, a bold, single-varietal statement that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s greatest Syrahs.

Crafted by Luca D’Attoma and Elena Celli, the minds behind Duemani, this wine reflects a philosophy of absolute purity: no pesticides, no synthetic chemicals, no compromises. The vineyard is a stony, sun-drenched plot farmed according to biodynamic principles. The name “Suisassi” translates to “on the rocks” — a nod to the vineyard’s intensely stony soil, which stresses the vines just enough to yield powerful, expressive fruit.

The 2018 vintage was one of balance and elegance. It brought a harmonious structure, allowing Syrah to shine with its signature notes of violet, cracked black pepper, dark berries, and smoky game. The palate is powerful yet graceful, showing plush black fruit, graphite, dried herbs, and hints of olive tapenade, finishing with silky tannins and a savoury edge.

Fermented with native yeasts in open-top barrels and aged in French oak for 20 months, “Suisassi” is bottled unfiltered and unmanipulated. It’s a wine for true believers — in Syrah, in terroir, in wild beauty.

Tasting Notes:

  • Aromas: Blueberry compote, lavender, black pepper, roasted meat, smoked herbs

  • Palate: Concentrated and plush with ripe black fruit, wild herbs, grilled plum, and a distinct mineral backbone

  • Finish: Long, savoury, slightly saline with structured yet polished tannins

Perfect Pairings:

  • Dry-aged lamb chops with rosemary

  • Chargrilled eggplant with tahini and za’atar

  • Peking duck with hoisin and five spice

  • Wagyu beef burgers with blue cheese

  • Smoky charcuterie and hard sheep’s milk cheese

Accolades:

  • 98 Points – James Suckling: “A spectacular Syrah. Deep, wild, and magnetic. World-class.”

  • 97 Points – Wine Advocate: “One of the greatest expressions of Syrah in Italy. Transparent, structured, and profoundly expressive.”

  • Tre Bicchieri – Gambero Rosso

  • Top 10 Italian Wines of the Year – Wine Spectator (2020)

Vineyard & Terroir:
The “Suisassi” vineyard at Duemani is perched at 250 metres above sea level in Riparbella, on Tuscany’s wild coast. The soils are extremely rocky and poor — ideal for Syrah to develop concentration and minerality. Exposed to constant sea breezes and intense sun, the vines are biodynamically cultivated and yield tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit.

Everything is done by hand. The wine is fermented in open-top oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, punched down manually, and aged for 20 months in French oak (50% new). No fining. No filtration. Just raw, unfiltered terroir.

Why We Love It:
Because this wine doesn’t ask for permission. It’s Syrah from the wild side — bold, smoky, and unapologetically Mediterranean. If “Duemani” is elegance and “Cifra” is clarity, then “Suisassi” is attitude. It’s a Syrah that captures the beating heart of the Tuscan coast: sun, stone, salt, and soul.
