A quiet favourite from a rosé estate.
Château Les Valentines is best known for rosé, but the estate’s organic red has its own fans. A blend of five Mediterranean grapes with ripe dark fruit, wild herbs and supple tannins. This is the 2019, so it has softened with bottle age.
Tastes like: Blackberry and black cherry, with thyme, liquorice and pepper.
Feels like: Medium-bodied and dry, with a bit of grip, balanced freshness and a light touch of oak.
Great with: Grilled lamb, ratatouille, beef daube, hard cheeses.
Singapore and Asian favourites: Lamb satay, roast duck, black pepper beef.
The geeky bit: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan from schist soils close to the sea at La Londe-les-Maures. Aged in large oak vats and Burgundy barrels. Certified organic.
Why we like it: The warmth of the south, with none of the heaviness.
Serve: 16 to 18°C. Room temperature in Singapore is too warm for red wine, so give it 20 minutes in the fridge first.
Alcohol: 14%
