Some nights, you don’t want to go out. You just want to kick back, pour yourself a nice Pinot, and get lost in a movie that gets wine. The romance. The chaos. The vines. The drama. The scandals.
Whether you’re a Chardonnay chiong-ster, a Merlot minimalist, or a full-blown Burgundy nerd, here’s our Vin Geek-approved list of wine movies to pair with your favourite bottle. Popcorn optional, wine glass mandatory.
1. Sideways (2004)
Best Paired With: Pinot Noir – duh lah.
This cult classic made Pinot Noir cool and Merlot uncool (unfairly, we say). Follow two mismatched buddies on a wine road trip through California’s Santa Ynez Valley. There’s romance, midlife angst, and a LOT of swishing, sniffing, and spitting.
“I am NOT drinking any f**ing Merlot!”*
Legendary line. Must-watch.

2. Somm (2012)
Best Paired With: Whatever you’re proud to identify blind.
Ever wonder what it takes to become a Master Sommelier? This documentary is basically wine Olympics. Four wine nerds cram, swirl, and cry their way toward one of the toughest exams on earth.
Serious geek level: HIGH.
Stress level: also HIGH.
Great if you’re studying WSET or like judging wine labels on sight. (You know who you are.)
3. Uncorked (2020)
Best Paired With: Sparkling rosé or something unexpected.
A heartwarming story about a Memphis guy torn between his family BBQ legacy and his dream of becoming a sommelier in Paris. It’s about ambition, love, and—of course—wine. Underrated gem!
Foodie bonus: the BBQ scenes confirm wine does go with ribs.
4. A Year in Burgundy (2013)
Best Paired With: A good white or red Burgundy (but expensive sia…)
Intimate, poetic, and slow-paced—this is a deep dive into the lives of seven winemaking families in Burgundy. You’ll feel like you’re walking the vineyard in rain boots and mud. Earthy, romantic, and meditative.
Warning: you’ll want cheese after watching.
5. Bottle Shock (2008)
Best Paired With: California Chardonnay (preferably not oxidised)
Based on the true story of the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where California wines shocked the French wine elite. Chris Pine with long hair. Alan Rickman playing a snooty Brit wine merchant. It’s campy, but fun!
Wine underdog story. Think Cool Runnings, but with barrels.

6. Mondovino (2004)
Best Paired With: Something natural, biodynamic, or weird.
This globetrotting documentary is a love-it-or-hate-it experience. It explores the politics, money, and power behind big wine vs. small producers. Not easy viewing, but definitely geek-worthy.
Warning: Very little wine drinking. Lots of philosophical talk.
Enjoy With: 2022 Charles Frey “Maceration” – Alsace, France – Orange Wine with Alsatian Flair
7. Wine Country (2019)
Best Paired With: Rosé all day (and some snacks lah)
A group of gal pals go on a birthday wine trip in Napa, and things (obviously) spiral. Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Tina Fey make this a hilarious, relatable, slightly chaotic wine-soaked comedy.
Think of it as a hen’s night with hangovers, friendship, and Merlot redemption.
