Haut-Brion. Quiet power, perfectly tailored.

Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s five First Growths, and the only one outside the Médoc. The 2017 is about balance and structure more than sheer richness: earthy fruit, spice and elegant tannins that frame every sip like a silk-lined suit.

Tastes like: Blackberry and plum skin, with tobacco leaf, cedar and crushed gravel.
Feels like: Full-bodied and dry, with firm, drying grip, bright freshness and oak in the background.
Great with: Beef tenderloin, lamb shank, wild mushroom tart, roast pheasant.
Singapore and Asian favourites: Wagyu yakiniku, Peking duck, braised beef short rib.

The geeky bit: 53% Merlot, 40.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.3% Cabernet Franc, from the gravel soils of Pessac-Léognan.

Accolades: 98 pts James Suckling · 97 pts Wine Advocate · 97 pts Decanter · 96 pts Wine Spectator

Why we like it: It is Haut-Brion. A study in controlled power.

Serve: 16 to 18°C. Room temperature in Singapore is too warm for red wine, so give it 20 minutes in the fridge first. Decant 30 to 60 minutes.
Alcohol: 13.5%
