3ème Grand Cru Classé
Producer: Château Calon Ségur
"Château Calon Segur from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux is one of the fourteen classified third growths in the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855. It is one of the original three vineyards in Saint-Estèphe and is a historic estate once housing the famous Château Montrose in 1825. It is also the northernmost classified growth in the Médoc. Former owner Nicolas-Alexandre, marquis de Ségur who also controlled Château Latour and Château Lafite at the time, once claimed that his “heart was with Calon” leading to the modern-day label to contain a heart-shaped around the name of the wine. The estate has been owned by the Capbern Gasqueton family since 1894. The wines of Château Calon Segur have been cited in falling between Cos d’Estournel and Montrose in style, being long-lived without aggression. "
Vintage: The 2005 vintage is an exceptional one in Bordeaux. From Chateau Calon Segur on the great terroir of Saint-Estephe, the vintage produces a wine of great quality that is marked by the signature finesse and elegance of the estate. The vintage respects the balance between exceptional intensity and great suppleness, and the tannins are present and full of finesse, which give a caressing and dense texture. The Chateau Calon Segur 2005 presents pleasant aromas of black fruits (black cherry in particular), touches of chocolate, spices, dried fruits and even leather. This wine from Saint-Estephe is ready to drink now or can be aged until 2045-2050.
Tasting Notes: This is a wonderfully constructed wine, with very fine, silky tannins and an intense core of classic brambly St Estèphe fruit with a whiff of mulberries. It is pure and fresh with the 60% Cabernet Sauvignon - brooding, as if waiting to leap out - very much to the fore. This is completely different to their famous 2003, and although Madame will not be drawn on the matter, we certainly think it is considerably superior.
